We are a family of a thirteen year old girl and two parents, so we’re looking for a (family-friendly) interesting place to visit. We really want to go somewhere cool, because we live in Texas, so a cool place would be a nice change. We want it to be somewhere with interesting things like antique shopping, historical sights, and a few bad neighborhoods (my mom loves to see the places that aren’t tourist-y). It would also be nice to see a place with great scenery and maybe near water. Also, it needs to be somewhere within the continental U.S. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A primer of book-collecting
If you like beaches then Hawaii or Florida is the best for you but if you wish to see some world attractions try to visit Los Angeles the home of Disneyland, Hollywood Universal Studios and some beaches like Venice.

Asheville, NC – though I am not certain about “bad neighborhoods”.
It is in the Smoky Mountains so not as hot as Texas during summer, and there is lots to do (not just Biltmore):
I have stayed at the Cataloochee Ranch (above Maggie Valley outside Asheville) twice and really enjoyed it:
San Francisco.
you want to cool off, most of the time you will need a sweater or jacket and at night a coat. So many thing to do in the city shopping, fisherman’s wharf and Golden Gate park with the museum and California Academy of Science.
It is surrounded by water. You can drive down the coast to Santa Cruz and Monterey. Up north is the Marin coast which is quite scenic. It is a 3 – 4 hour drive to the Sierra Nevada mountains. There you can go to Big Trees State Park and see giant redwood trees. Or go to Lake Tahoe.
Bad neighborhoods? Hunters point is probably the worst and not the safest. The Tenderloin in the city is pretty sleazy. South part of the city is the Mission district, not bad but old and picturesque. This where Mission Delores is located.
If you decide you want to warm up for a day you could go south to San Juan Batista and go to the mission, maybe get in some antique shopping.
These are just a few highlights as there is much more to do and see.
