Meredith N asked:
My husband was received his grandmother’s house and everything in it in her will. She just passed away, and we are trying to figure out what to do with all the antique furniture and nick-nacks in it. We know some of it is worth a lot of money so we don’t just want to have an estate sale and allow strangers to come through the house. What is the easiest and cheapest way to sell it?

have it advertised with the antiques and u could double the money you would make with a garage sale
put it in the hands of a Realtor but you’ll loose out
u should use an estate sales company but if u don’t want to u’ll take a lose

Easiest, cheapest, or get the most money??? Pick one.
Hiring an auctioneer (who will normally get 10% of the proceeds) is a good way to go. They will handle all the advertising, do the selling, do the paperwork, and collect the money. They may either do this on site or haul everything back to their auction house depending upon how they work, your location, and the amount of material.
You could do the same, onsie-twosie via E-bay but then you have assumed all the work. Inventory it, photo it, describe it, post it, and consummate the sale, including delivery/shipping.
You could also have an antiques dealer come in and make one offer on everything. You will probably get about 1/2 the amount of the “retail” value or less. Then they inventory it, and have it sit in their store until is sells, so they are not really making a killing.
People that haunt garage sales are often looking for a cheap bargain. You will also be faced with not selling a large part of it, unless you have extraordinary luck. Similarly, packing it all up and renting a stall at a “flea market” or “antique market.”
Consignment stores will also take merchandise, but get 40-50% of the sales price. You may also be encouraged to take it back or mark it down if it doesn’t sell quickly.
